While most bills seem to be skyrocketing, there's one expense in Northern Ireland that's actually heading in the opposite direction: the cost of filling up your car. But why are fuel prices dropping, and how long can this trend last?
According to the Consumer Council NI (CCNI), petrol prices have dipped to 124.2 pence per litre, the lowest they've been in five years. Diesel, meanwhile, holds steady at 131.9 pence per litre. This welcome relief comes after prices peaked in June 2022, reaching a staggering 189.9 pence per litre for unleaded and 197.5 pence per litre for diesel, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
So, what's behind this downward trend? Karen Smyth, CCNI's director of infrastructure and sustainability, explains that fuel prices are influenced by a complex web of factors. These include the type and volume of fuel retailers purchase, Northern Ireland's position within the global market, and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
"It's a global game," Smyth explains, "with local prices heavily influenced by international supply and demand, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical instability. While it's difficult to predict future prices, the current oversupply of oil is a key factor in keeping costs down."
Are drivers feeling the benefit? At a bustling Belfast petrol station, opinions vary. Jane, a regular driver, notices a significant weekly savings on diesel. "It's a welcome change after feeling like prices were constantly climbing," she says, though she admits to using fuel price comparison apps less frequently now. Taxi driver Mohamed, however, feels the prices are still too high, despite driving a hybrid vehicle. "It's a step in the right direction, but we're not out of the woods yet," he says.
Michael, topping up his fuel, admits he doesn't closely monitor daily price fluctuations. "I drive a lot, so any savings add up over time," he reflects. "Looking back to 2022, when prices were at their peak, I was definitely more conscious of every penny."
Can we expect prices to keep falling? Smyth cautiously optimizes that the easing of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, along with stability in the Middle East, are contributing to lower prices. However, she warns against complacency: "The global market is unpredictable. While the current trend is positive, future challenges could always emerge."
