UK Inflation Surpasses Forecasts, Hitting 3.4% in December

The U.K.'s inflation rate surged to 3.4% in December, surpassing the forecasted 3.3% from economists surveyed by Reuters. This marks a significant rebound from the 3.2% recorded in November, which had led the Bank of England to consider cutting interest rates at its year-end meeting.
Core inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco, remained steady at 3.2% in December, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics. These figures, coupled with employment data released on Monday indicating a further cooling in the labor market, have sparked doubts about the Bank of England's planned February rate cut.
"We anticipate the Bank of England to maintain its current stance for at least the next couple of meetings," commented Matthew Ryan, head of Market Strategy at Ebury, on Monday. "The hawks on the committee have long highlighted the potential upside risks to U.K. inflation, but these concerns are diminishing as the employment landscape deteriorates and wage pressures moderate," he added.
